Interview Magazine, March 09: Mary-Kate Olsen

CB: I was thinking about you while being in Milan this week. You sit at a fashion show in another country and you watch all of these paparazzi swarm around a celebrity, only they're a local celebrity, maybe a soap opera star, so you don't have any idea who they are, you just know they're famous to a bunch of stunned Italians. It's weird, because when you can't identify who a celebrity is, they can just look like overslicked stand-ins. That might sound awful, but what I mean is, when you think about most actresses, even in Hollywood, they really aren't that fascinating or glamorous in their own right once you strip away the flashbulbs. But you're one of the very few actresses of your generation to cultivate your own style, totally original and authentic. When did that start for you?

MKO: For me, it really started by looking at people. There are just some really beautiful people in the world. When you're walking down the street, or you're at a restaurant, someone catches your eye because they have their own look. It goes way beyond what they're wearing-into their mannerisms, the way they smile, or just the way they hold themselves.

Gotta love the Japanese

What person can wear a giant metallic hat, hooker boots with over the knee socks attached to a garter belt and carry a channel 11 microphone AND pull it off.
Japanese people really go all out with their outfits and styles and they aren't afraid to show it.
That's fashion, baby.

To wear or not to wear; Black.

The color black and I have been on some rough patches. I remember during my junior high school years I loved black so much. I wore them with chains, studs, and long black hair. All my shirts were black, all my pants were black. Black accessories, black nails, black everything. I loved black.
Until my second year of high school, I met color. I saw how color can make you brighter, happier, stand out, and just have more fun. I also mixed with prints and even dyed my hair three colors: blonde, pink, and purple. I came out of the over rainbowed stage and stayed on the fine line between color and black. Neutrals.
And heres where I am now.
The other day I bought the American Apparel Double U dress in red. It was sexy, sultry, and damn, did it make me feel hot. When I got home, I went online and stared at the American Apparel Double U long sleeve dress in black. I kept think of the balance between sexy and chic it created. But another black? I didn't need another black. I started looking through my lookbook and realized, I didn't have enough blacks.
I don't know but my obsession with black is started to come back out and I want to embrace it full force.
Why not? Black is probably the most flattering color out there. It slims you down, its doesn't get dirty as easily, and damn, it goes with everything.
